Dog-Friendly Winter Cabins Near Ottawa

It can be hard to get outdoors and spend time in nature in the winter… But despite the cold it’s so worth it. There’s also something incredibly joyful about spending a few days tucked away in a cabin in the woods surrounded by piles of snow (with no mosquitoes)! And I know a lot of you love to do that with your pups, but can’t always find dog-friendly places to bring them.

So here’s a list of all the nature-based stays near Ottawa that I could find to get you into the woods with your dogs this winter!

Some I’ve stayed at and some I’m only looking forward to staying at, so if you’ve gone, please share your experience with others in the comments!

Hammond Hill

Distance from Ottawa: 35 minutes east
Location:
861 Du Golf Rd, Hammond, ON K0A 2A0
Type of Stay:
Hammond Hill has yurts and tiny homes that are dog friendly all season.
Activities Nearby:
On site there’s a short hiking trail, and next door at the golf course are XC ski trails. There are also snowmobile tours available on site. Fire pits are available at each site.
Notes:
We stayed at one of Hammond Hill’s yurts during the fall and it was beautiful and super comfortable. Hammond Hill has only been in operation for a few years and unfortunately had their property devastated by the 2022 derecho, which caused thousands of trees on the property to fall. So many of the sites are no longer set back into the “woods” as they once would have been. But, the tiny house village at Hammond Hill is the perfect spot to gather with a group of dog-loving friends while still enjoying your own accommodations at the end of the day!

Borefuge

Distance from Ottawa: 40 minutes north
Location:
490 Chem. de la Mine, L’Ange-Gardien, QC J8L 2W9
Type of Stay:
Yurts
Activities Nearby:
Hiking on site, dog-sledding right next door, and a fire pit on your site. There are additional hiking trails at the Forêt-la-Blanche Ecological Reserve and Denholm Falls Park within half an hour, and Parc Omega is only 35 minutes away.
Notes:
We stayed at Borefuge for our daughter’s second birthday and loved it. The yurts were gorgeous and so comfortable, and the lookout on the hiking trail there was stunning! With the dogsledding team being right next door you do hear some barking on occasion so if this will bother YOUR dog that may be something to consider. Otherwise, I absolutely recommend Borefuge!

Somewhere Inn

Distance from Ottawa: 1 hour and 5 minutes west
Location:
5254 Calabogie Rd, Calabogie, ON K0J 1H0
Type of Stay:
Somewhere Inn is a beautifully renovated motel in Calabogie with a huge property where you can spend time outside sitting by the fire, visiting the wine bar, or lounging in their hammocks and reading under the trees.
Activities Nearby:
All the activities available in Calabogie are nearby, including hiking and skiing or snowboarding at Calabogie Peaks. There are also fat bike rentals, kick sled rentals, and ATV and snowmobile tours nearby!
Notes:
We had a little staycation at Somewhere Inn during the fall and loved it. The rooms are so beautiful, and the atmosphere so relaxing. And Calabogie is such a beautiful location for getting outdoors that it makes an absolutely perfect place to unwind.

Le Terrain Wilderness Park

Distance from Ottawa: 1 hour and 10 minutes north
Location:
528 Chem. Fierobin, Ladysmith, Quebec J0X 2A0
Type of Stay:
A yurt, a log cabin, and a cabin designed especially for stargazing.
Activities Nearby:
There are snowshoeing trails on site and brilliant opportunities for stargazing, as LeTerrain is designed to be an off grid experience and so is VERY dark! Campfire pits are available on site.
Notes:
LeTerrain is designed to help you reconnect with nature while protecting it, so there is no running water or wifi. Well water is provided and if you really need reception you can hike to the top of one of the peaks on the property. We haven’t ever stayed at LeTerrain but I think my daughter would adore the Stargazer cabin, whose roof is open to the night sky.

Les Refuges Perchés Mont-Tremblant

Distance from Ottawa: 2 hours and 15 minutes northeast
Location:
5000 Chem. du Lac Caribou, Mont-Blanc, Quebec J0T 1J2
Type of Stay:
All sorts of treehouses built in different styles, to work with the natural environment. These are all set back in the woods, surrounding Lac du Cordon.
Activities Nearby:
On site there are beautiful hiking trails of different lengths and difficulty. Just half an hour away is Mont Tremblant, with everything the mountain and surrounding area have to offer. There are fire pits available on each site as well.
Notes:
I’ve stayed at the Mont Tremblant Treehouses twice, in summer and in winter as well. Each treehouse requires a short walk from the parking lot, varying in distance (but some of the shortest take only 5 minutes!). This allows you to really feel like you’re immersed in nature, while still being close to additional amenities. The treehouses are all cozy and comfortable, with the accommodations on the west side being the newer of the bunch- I haven’t stayed in those yet! For additional info you can read more about my summer stay, or about the time we went during the winter for our daughter’s first birthday!

Winter activities at Silent Lake Provincial Park include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing. Fire pits are available on site.
Notes: I haven’t stayed at either of these accommodations, but if you’ve stayed at a cabin or yurt with Ontario Provincial Parks before, I’m sure the amenities here will be very similar. Book early as these accommodations are popular and book up fast!

Cabinscape

Distance from Ottawa: Cabinscape has over 20 cabins that are dog friendly, in multiple different locations.
Location: See their website for cabin-specific details.
Type of Stay: Tiny, off-grid cabins in the woods.
Activities Nearby:
Location specific, see website.
Notes:
We’ve stayed at one of Cabinscapes’ cabins in Calabogie, and it was beautifully built and thought out. The mattresses were super comfy, and the kitchen had everything we needed to feed our family of four for a couple of days. There are additional packages you can add on to customize your experience, like their photography package, romance package, and so on.

Where Else to Look

All the stays above were selected because of their dog-friendliness AND proximity to nature. But if none of the above seem like the fit for you (or there’s no availability), there are a few other places to look. Check out airbnb.ca or bringfido.com. And if I missed your favorite dog-friendly, nature-based winter escape, let me know in the comments so I can include it!
